Adopted by Roy Rogers

I remember as a child lying in bed at night
Covers over my head, listening to them fight.
And I always wondered when I heard my name
If I was the cause or if I was to blame?
Had I played too loud and made them mad?
Forgotten my chores and made them sad?

I had to do something that was for sure.
I needed to be adopted by Roy Rogers!
Praying he’d hurry and find me each night,
Hiding under my covers ‘til the time was right.
Then off into the sunset we would both ride
Adopted by Roy Rogers, partners side by side.

I always knew that Roy adopted kids like me.
He only wanted special ones for his family.
I’d have to like horses and ridin’ the range.
Could I wear chaps or would I look strange?
Was my head too small for a ten gallon hat?
And if I wore boots would I fall down flat?

I had to do something that was for sure,
I needed to be adopted by Roy Rogers!
Praying he’d hurry and find me each night,
Hiding under my covers ‘til the time was right.
Then off into the sunset we would both ride
Adopted by Roy Rogers, partners side by side.

I didn’t ever give up even though he never came.
And hiding under blankets became a nightly game.
My westward imagination helped tuned out all the fights.
And pretending Roy was on his way got me through those nights.

I had to do something that was for sure.
I needed to be adopted by Roy Rogers!
Praying he’d hurry and find me each night
Hiding under my covers ‘til the time was right.
Then off into the sunset we would both ride
Adopted by Roy Rogers, partners side by side.
